There is a reason that I am no longer a registered Republican and have begun working with The American Conservative Party to develop a viable third-party option to those pinheads in Washington – one of those being they consistently vote against our military veterans every step of the way. Imagine my surprise when I read this from our buddy Marc Chamot over at The Examiner.com:
Really, people? We’re facing a $3.6 Trillion spending budget with a deficit of $1.6 Trillion – you submit a budget with only $61 Billion in cuts, the OMB publishes a report stating there is over $100 Billion in overlapping departments and programs – and you decide our military Veterans need to get the shaft? I was truly hoping that the new TEA Party candidates would have a bigger impact – apparently, not.
I guarantee you I can find at least $1.6 Trillion to cut out of our government based on the 2010 Budget:
The Department of Education – $46.7 Billion
The Department of Energy – $26.3 Billion
The EPA – $10.5 Billion
Medicare – $453 Billion
Medicaid – $295 Billion
Social Security – $695 Billion
Social Security Administration – $9.7 Billion
National Infrastructure Bank – $5 Billion
Corporation for National and Community Service – $1.1 Billion
Total of All the Above – $1.54 Trillion – okay – I was a little close. My figures are based on if you cut those programs and departments out completely. If you click that link above to see the total 2010 budget – you will see the percentage increases of 2009. I would cut back all of those increases to the 2006 levels of spending. In addition, you will notice what is absent as itemized in the budget – all the Congressional perks such as a subsidized cafeteria, gas, car, insurance, housing allowance, lifetime benefits consisting of a pension and health care. Also absent the itemization are the IRS and Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. I would cut out ALL the perks these politicians enjoy, do away with the IRS entirely, and sell of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. I guarantee you I will would produce a surplus.
Those idiots in Congress need to do the right thing and just start slashing everywhere. This country is in serious financial disaster right now. Our dollar is tanking, the stock market is headed downward again, gas prices are going through the roof, food prices are about to spike, and true unemployment is about to hit 20%.
They need to lay off our Veterans.
As it has become very apparent – I am so AGAINST illegal aliens invading this country. What I am FOR is LEGAL immigration. I just came across something this is just so absolutely outrageous I have no choice but to put up a blog post about this in order to help get the word out there.
h/t to Agrippa Hull for sending this to me. Agrippa sent me a link via facebook to be a fan of this page
Please become a fan and then pass it on to others. From there, I found his story at Democracy Now – yes, I know – it is generally a loony left radio broadcast – but – here is the story and the radio transcript.
Here is the story in a nutshell – This man, Rohan Coombs, was born in Jamaica and his family emigrated here when he was 13. At age 20 he joined the Marine Corp. He served for six years and even did a tour in the Persian gulf during the first Gulf War. He was discharged after his service in 1993. In 2002 he was picked up on drug possession charges and served 8 months prison time. Immediately upon release from prison he was picked up by DHS and ICE and is currently in the process of being deported. The reason he is being deported is because he is not a U.S. Citizen and he committed a drug crime. This generally is immediate cause for deportation of non-citizens.
Under normal circumstances – I would agree with this. However, this man is a veteran, served in our military for 6 years, and even fought for our country in the Gulf War. Forget that he had drug charges 9 years after his discharge. The military and government do have a streamlined process for those non-citizens who are serving in the military. It appears he filed his application for citizenship in 1988 (and the government has record of it). However, as our government red tape is ever so present – they screwed up and it never got processed. He never heard back so he assumed his application was accepted and that he was a citizen.
At the time Rohan and his family emigrated to the U.S. Jamaica and the U.S. had a relationship in that prior to 1989 – Green Cards were issued that had no expiration date. Rohan was and is here legally. The problem he is having is that when he cut the deal with the prosecutors in his case – he was not informed that if he does jail time for the crime – it would mean automatic deportation. Follow the link to the transcript and read the story – apparently – there is already a SCOTUS decision that states that all immigrants are required to be informed at the time of arrest that should they go to jail they will be deported. The prosecutors obviously knew had legal immigrant status at the time they made the deal. They should have informed him of the consequences.
I don’t condone his actions and he should have gone to jail for what he did. However, the man served his time and he also fought for this country. Doesn’t that mean something? I know this might seem like an unusual position for me to take – but – think of the overall picture here – regardless of the fact that this man went to jail for drug related charges – what about all those other non-citizens who serve and fight for this country? Why should it be necessary for them to HAVE to apply for citizenship. We are a country of immigrants. Those legal immigrants who put themselves in harms way and put on the uniform of our American military should be automatically granted citizenship.
Anyway – read his story. He is not the only one in this situation.
h/t to Jan – This is a must see video. If you don’t pass on the video – please – at least pass on the story. The ACLU is currently in the process of trying to have this WWI Veteran Memorial torn down and removed from the Mojave Desert in California. Why would they do this? To appease one man who lives in Oregon that has never even driven by or seen the memorial. He wants it removed just because he “might” see it one day. This is atrocious and an egregious act not only against our military – but – it is also an attack against Christianity as well. Please take the time out to view this video and let others know. We can’t allow them to remove this memorial to our service members. Show your support, go to Don’t Tear Me Down and sign their petition. If you’re a blogger – add their widget – you can see mine on the side there. You can also follow them on Twitter, and Facebook.
Please use the “share this” button below and share it with everyone you know through whatever services you have. Stumble, Digg, Propeller, etc – this is an important story and needs to get out there. Take the video and put it up on your blogs too.

First – it looks like over night I hit the 50,000+ mark for visitors! Woo Hoo! Not bad for being under a year old here. In case you guys don’t know – I will be celebrating my one year blogiversary here come February 28th!
Now – regarding this post – I promised Larry from Last Refuge of a Scoundrel I would put this up. He’s a retired Navy veteran himself. I’m a zoomie – but – I support anything that has to do with our military, active duty & retired, any service. He brought something to light that I was not aware of – as the title states – Navy Veterans and Mesothelioma. Apparently, many of the older Navy ships were built with asbestos in the walls. When they scrap the old ships they have to remove the asbestos which apparently is more harmful than if they had just left it there.
I did a little research of my own and found out some very interesting statistics. There was a 1980 study conducted by Geoffrey Sheers from the Plymouth Hospital and Ruth Coles of the Davenport Naval Base Medical Research Unit in England – They had found that in 1978 alone there were 108 deaths of naval dockyard workers related to mesothelioma. This means that as far back as 30+ years it was known that asbestos exposure was harmful to naval dockyard workers and naval personnel.
According to the Asbestos.com website – up to millions of veterans have been exposed to asbestos containing materials. More than 30% of those in the U.S. that have mesothelioma had prior exposure from the military. In a 2005 report in Military Medicine on planning for Military Occupational Health Care – the Surgeon Commodore, G.H. Grant McMillan specifically stated that departing and retiring military members should be aware of delayed effects of health, and in particular, asbestos exposure.
Apparently, asbestos exposure resulting in mesothelioma is very common in veterans. If you haven’t figured it out yet, or haven’t heard of it yet, mesothelioma is a pretty nasty disease. Asbestos is made of fibrous material that is inhaled and plants itself in the pleura of the lungs. There are four types of malignant mesothelioma: pleural (lung), pericardial (heart), peritoneal (abdominal), and testicular. Mesothelioma is also called asbestos cancer. The outcome usually is death.
There is support out there for veterans and they can find more information through the Asbestos.com website. If you are a veteran, active duty, friend or family of a veteran or military member, or are just so inclined – let’s help get the word out.
