Author I’m a bit short of time but I am putting this cross post from 454Monte.com on Bobo’s page to reach folks that may be from TN that frequent this blog.
This post was written in regards to the recent vote on the Anti-Gun bill S649 that no less than 16 Republicans defected and voted to allow it to come to the floor for debate.
“What could POSSIBLY go wrong with my vote to allow SB 679 to be opened for Debate?!?”
That’s the prevailing wisdom that Bob Corker R-TN seems to be espousing after being brought to task for his recent defection to the Democrats on S – 679.
S-679 as I mentioned on the below post is the latest ‘Gun Control” Legislation brought to the floor of the Senate by Harry Reid D-NV
Corker and 15 other Republicans, or RINOS as they are being called now a days, jumped ship and voted to allow the bill to proceed forward for debate.
After the vote I kept an eye on Senator Corkers Facebook page and predictably, it lit up with comments ranging from bitter disappointment with this vote all the way to calls for his recall. On Friday, possibly realizing the amount of anger over his vote – Senator Corker’s (I am assuming) staff posted this on his FB page:
There’s a lot of confusion out there. Here are the facts: Senator Corker is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and has an “A” rating from the NRA. http://1.usa.gov/ZlPS1J His vote Thursday was to allow S. 649 to be debated and amended and was not scored by the NRA. There will be another vote next week (which will also require 60 votes for passage) to allow a final vote on the bill. Senator Corker has said he will filibuster any legislation that violates our Second Amendment rights.
Browsing through those comments I think I just found the fabled 90% the Main stream media is touting as “for gun control”…but they got it wrong. Easily 9o% plus of the comments on Senator Corker and Senator Alexander pages are Pro Gun and they are in a word …outraged.
Nice try at Damage Control Senator – it didn’t work. Just to be even more of a thorn in your side – I’ve already called the NRA and they are on notice that if your A rating is not withdrawn IMMEDIATELY That they can rest assured any further donations from this life time member are done.They’ll be panhandling in the back alleys of D.C. with the bums and crack whores before I give them one red cent. That gos for you too Lamar Alexander.
I don’t care if it takes 60 or 6 Million votes to pass this bill Senator, the fact of the matter is you both are ON RECORD as voting for a bill that has put the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution directly in the cross-hairs of the very people you were elected to oppose. The Liberal Democrats. You have BOTH ran for office on a promise to the people of TN to protect the 2ND amendment rights of your respective districts. You lied. You will be held accountable.
But hey, thanks too, for further alienating your voters by telling us we’re ‘confused” Really, Let me dispel any confusion on YOUR part Mr. Corker – I’m not confused. Not the least little bit. I know a liar when I see one.
But to help dispel any confusion YOU might have – My rights are NOT up for Debate – Not by Bob Corker, Not By Harry Reid, Not by Lamar Alexander, not by any of you fools in DC playing political games. Your vote on S 649 Was and will remain a clear cut case of ignoring the wishes and will of your constituents in TN and I fully intend – no matter HOW you vote moving forward on this legislation – to give my political contributions to your challenger, and vote against you and your cohort Mr. Alexander. You two political clowns have betrayed the people of TN for the last time if I have anything to say about it.
Does the word PRINCIPLE mean anything to you Mr. Corker? Look it up, maybe it will clear up YOUR confusion.
Sadly? Blue Collar Muse a fellow TN Conservative Blogger I’ve dealt with in the past seems to think this vote or behavior of Mr. Corkers and the other 15 Republicans is okay. It’s not Muse. Not even remotely.
I disagree with both you and Senators Corker and Alexander. Vehemently. And Here’s why.
As I’ve stated previously – there are ALREADY 300+ Federal and State Gun control measures on the books. In my opinion every one of them if not outright unconstitutional they are certainly pushing the limits. For example, Concealed Carry Permits. I’ve long held that CCW permits are an blatant infringement of the 2ND Amendment. I have a right enshrined in the US Constitution to keep and bear arms. No where in that Constitution does it say “if the state says I can” likewise laws against Open Carry. I can’t help it if seeing a gun holstered on my hip make liberals wet their britches, not my problem – but it IS a clear cut infringement of MY rights to keep and bear arms when I have to restrict where and when and how I carry my sidearms. So I don’t. I carry when, where and how it suits me, the politicians and their unconstitutional laws be damned.
But back to the point of the post – and why the Blue Collar Muse and I disagree…what could possibly go wrong with my elected representatives playing politics with the Bill or Rights?
This – the gavel had barely closed the vote to allow S 649 to proceed when the amendments started pouring in. Specifically SA 711 from who else? Senator Diane Feinstein and her band of merry collaborators.
This amendment quite frankly makes the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 look like it was written by the NRA – It is that bad. I won’t post the entire thing here, it’s too long, but take the time to go look at SA 711 using the link I provided above.
So my question to Corker and people like the Muse are….did you think this WASN’T going to happen? What about you Muse? Did you not think the woman who is on record as saying if she had to votes to force Americans to “turn in their firearms” she would have done so – was NOT going to immediately amend this bill…and insert language that outlaws HUNDREDS of commonly owned firearms? That they were not going to attempt to strip millions of Americans of their rights using language that deems them “mentally deficient” because they visited a doctor for treatment of something as simple as insomnia?
Confusion Senator Corker? No – the only one confused here is you. You are confused on the clear and simple language of the United States Constitution.
There are only two possible outcomes of your vote allowing this to proceed. You were pandering for votes from anti gun types – or you are in bed with the likes of Diane Feinstien. Lock.Stock. AND Barrel. Which is it?
No matter what it is – this TN resident is committed. I will work tirelessly to see you voted out of office for your vote on allowing S649 To proceed. You too Mr. Alexander. Enjoy your tax payer funded retirement gentlemen.

There are 10.2 gun related deaths per 100,000 in America
There are 20.7 non-fatal gun related injuries per 100,000 in America
I’m not even going to link the other more recent headlines – the Sikh Temple shooting this month, the Aurora Colorado slaughter last month, the school shootings this year claiming 14 victims in all – Walpole Elementary, Chardon High School, Oikos University, Texas A&M just this month – , the Tulsa, OK shooting spree in April – need I go on?
Okay – I’m about to go all geeky on you guys here – I’m going to do the math for you on the gun related deaths and non-fatal related injuries:
$ \frac{314,229,776}{100,000}10.2=32,051$ Deaths a year in the US.
$ \frac{314,229,776}{100,000}20.7= 65,045$ Non-lethal firearm injuries a year in the U.S.
Population statistics are from the U.S. Census Bureau. It will probably be different if you go out there – but not significantly – it seems to change every second.
That is 97,096 people either killed or injured due to firearms every year. That is .031% of the whole population. I know that doesn’t seem like much – but – come on! Almost 100,000 people? People are flipping out now because there are 6,551 soldiers that have been killed during the entire almost 10 years of both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined!!!
I’m about as solid an NRA supporter and contributor and 100% behind the 2nd Amendment and our right to bear arms as one can get. But seriously, WTF is GOING ON OUT THERE? Has this world just gone apeshit or what? I’m not looking for a ban on guns by no means – but – there is absolutely something seriously wrong when every other week we are hearing about some psycho nutjob that got his hands on a gun and decided to go nuts on innocent bystanders.
I don’t know what the answer is – but – taking guns away from the average law-abiding citizen is not the answer. There has to be some type of control to keep such weapons out of the hands of looney toons and criminals like these! If you have an answer – please do share!
UPDATE!: Want to give a h/t to Larry over at Last Refuge of a Scoundrel as in the comments below he so rightly pointed out that many of these areas where the most heinous crimes are committed are actually in gun-free zones/states. You know, when I heard that Obama signed the E.O. giving Interpol rights that go beyond our constitution, I thought I had heard it all. We already know that Obama hates our Constitution and would do anything to destroy it. I bet, if the man could get away with it, he’d go down to the national museum and pull out the original and burn it.
Then, I came across this. I’m real curious – this happened in October. Why the HELL was this not plastered everywhere in the radio and the MSM?
As noted in “British gun control: Coming soon to a country near you? ” seven countries, led by the United Kingdom, are attempting to revive U.N. efforts to restrict imports and exports of small arms. On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the United States would reverse Bush administration opposition to international small arms control, potentially paving the way for the British-led effort, which calls for a vote by the U.N. General Assembly by year’s end.
Essentially, Hillary has made a commitment that this administration will work to join on to the U.N.’s Small Arms Treaty – one that every administration prior to this one has outright refused to join because it would infringe upon our 2nd Amendment rights and cede those rights to international scrutiny.
The National Association for Gun Rights recently put out the following release:

Ever since its founding almost 65 years ago, the United Nations has been hell-bent on bringing the United States to its knees.
To the petty dictators and one-worlders who control the UN, the U.S. isn’t a “shining city on a hill” — it’s an affront to their grand totalitarian designs for the globe.
These anti-gun globalists know that so long as Americans remain free to make our own decisions without being bossed around by big government bureaucrats, they’ll NEVER be able to seize the worldwide oppressive power they crave.
And the UN’s apologists also know the most effective way to finally strip you and me of ALL our freedoms would be to DESTROY our gun rights.

First, you know just as well as I do that not all the remaining Republicans in the Senate are “pro-gun” in any sense of the term.
Second, even with the partisan rancor in Washington, D.C., many GOP Senators get “queasy” about killing treaties for fear of “embarrassing” the President — especially with “international prestige” at stake.
They look at ratifying treaties much like approving Presidents’ Supreme Court nominees.
And remember, there were NINE Republicans who voted to confirm anti-gun Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
A dozen more GOP Senators only voted against Sotomayor after receiving massive grassroots pressure from the folks back home.
So if we’re going to defeat the UN’s “Small Arms Treaty” we have to turn the heat up on the U.S. Senate now before it’s too late!
That’s exactly where this petition comes in.
So won’t you click here to sign IMMEDIATELY?
Please sign that petition and let our Senators know we will not stand for this. I just hope at this point we can actually survive until 2010 and 2012. Those idiot progressives are going full board right now and don’t care about WE THE PEOPLE. The only thing that matters to them is their agenda. Pelosi and Reid are very willing to lose people in the next election so long as they can put an infrastructure within our government from which they can build on in the future.
The only way we can change anything that is passing is with an outright repeal of these Acts – which is damned near impossible. We need to continue to put pressure on those idiots in D.C. and make damned sure we elect the right people with the same values as we in the next election cycles.

If this isn’t proof for those libbers that this bill has absolutely nothing to do with health care reform and all about controlling our lives – in addition to the fact you will go to jail for 15 years if you don’t purchase insurance – there is also language that would potentially force gun-owners to make a decision -
1. Don’t purchase insurance and go to jail for 5 years.
2. Keep your guns and pay higher premiums
3. Get rid of your guns so that you don’t have to pay the higher premiums.

Section 112: Wellness Program Grants
Essentially, this section provides grants to small employers who institute wellness programs as defined by the DHHS Secretary (Anti-gun Sebelius). She gets to make the rules as to what programs qualify. While the language isn’t in there yet – it can be – which I will illustrate shortly.
(a) ALLOWANCE OF GRANT.—
(1) IN GENERAL.—For purposes of this section, the Secretaries of Health and Human Services and Labor shall jointly award wellness grants as determined under this section. Wellness program grants shall be awarded to small employers (as defined by the Secretary) for any plan year in an amount equal to 50 percent of the costs paid or incurred by such employers in connection with a qualified wellness program during the plan year. For purposes of the preceding sentence, in the case of any qualified wellness program offered as part of an employment based health plan, only costs attributable to the qualified wellness program and not to the health plan, or health insurance coverage offered in connection with such a plan, may be taken into account.
So – there is the incentive for small employers – they can get up to $50,000 for instituting a wellness program in their offices. So what is a qualified wellness program?
(1) QUALIFIED WELLNESS PROGRAM.—The term “qualified wellness program” means a program that —
(A) includes any 3 wellness components described in subsection (c); and
(B) is to be certified jointly by the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Labor, in coordination with the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as a qualified wellness program under this section.
(2) PROGRAMS MUST BE CONSISTENT WITH RESEARCH AND BEST PRACTICES.—
(A) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Labor shall not certify a program as a qualified wellness program unless the program—
(i) is consistent with evidence-based research and best practices, as identified by persons with expertise in employer health promotion and wellness programs;
(ii) includes multiple, evidence-based strategies which are based on the existing and emerging research and careful scientific reviews, including the Guide to Community Preventative Services, the Guide to Clinical Preventative Services, and the National Registry for Effective Programs, and
(iii) includes strategies which focus on prevention and support for employee populations at risk of poor health outcomes.
Having experience with “best practices and research” one needs to understand that there are already established studies out there, i.e “Youth Violence: A Report of The Surgeon General “ that states children are at risk if there are guns in their homes. In addition to that report that comes out annually – there are hundreds of other public health studies that are anti-gun that attempt to show that gun ownership is a public health risk. So – it is only a matter of the DHHS, CDC, and DOL deciding that guns are a public health risk and should be included – yes – they get to change the rules as they see fit:
(B) PERIODIC UPDATING AND REVIEW.—
The Secretaries of Health and Human Services and Labor, in consultation with other appropriate agencies shall jointly establish procedures for periodic review, evaluation, and update of the programs under this subsection.
So – there it is people. With everything else we have learned about this bill thus far – do you really want to trust this government having free reign to determine what is considered “acceptable behavior”? This bill has absolutely nothing about reform health care – it is a total power grab and attempt of instituting a European-style nanny-state here in the U.S. Please call your representatives and tell them this bill HAS to be shot down. If you can visit them personally – that would be even better.
This is just one example – there are literally dozen’s of these wellness program grants that could be affected – check out this mess – this is the bureaucracy of this bill – you will have to click on it to enlargen to see it clearly – but – to the far right you will see the various “wellness programs” that fall under their purview that can be “updated.” Feel free to steal this chart and put it up on your blog.
