Yes, the new health care bill DOES cover abortions.

Despite what P-BO and the rest of the liberal Dems have been saying – the fact remains that taxpayer funded abortions are covered under this monstrosity.

Health Care Issues: Paying for Abortions

Before I get in to some of the details – I will put it on record that I am anti-abortion – as if some of you hadn’t already figured that out.  I believe that all life is sacred – and especially the unborn that don’t have a voice.

HOWEVER – it is not my responsibility to tell another individual they can’t have an abortion.  My anti-abortion position comes from my religious and moral belief.  To me, abortion is outright murder.  Unfortunately, the SCOTUS has legalized this form of murder.  But, God is the real judge.  Those who have abortions and kill their unborn children will have to confront Him one day to plea their case.

Having said that – let’s move on – from the link above:

A look at key issues in the health care debate:

THE ISSUE: Would new health care legislation allow abortions to be funded with tax money?

THE POLITICS: Abortion opponents say proposed government-sponsored health insurance plans would change federal policy by paying for abortions in many cases. For years, a restriction in the law that governs Medicaid — health insurance for the poor — has barred federal funding of abortions except in cases of rape, incest and danger to the mother’s life. The proposed legislation would permit government-sponsored health plans, open to non-Medicaid patients, to cover abortions. In seeking a political compromise, a House version would require publicly sponsored plans to pay for abortions with private funds from customers’ premiums, not tax dollars. Critics call the requirement meaningless. They say public and private sources of insurance funding would essentially go into, and come out of, one big pot.

WHAT IT MEANS: Women with private insurance plans that cover abortion might be able to switch to a less-expensive public plan without losing that coverage. Anti-abortion activists would feel they’ve lost an important battle, as taxpayer funds mingle with some insurance plans that, one way or another, pay for abortions.

So – here’s the deal-i-o, this bill has no way of keeping private money from taxpayer money – as stated above – ergo – we taxpayers will be funding abortions.  For the 92% of us in this country that are religious – regardless of religious belief – we have a first amendment right to our belief.  I know that Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism all believe that abortion is immoral (I can’t say for the others, however, these alone represent a little more than 80% of the population – full breakdown is here).  As such, it would be a violation of our first amendment rights for our taxpayer dollars to fund these abortions.

I said earlier that it is not my place to tell someone they can’t have an abortion.  However, when MY tax dollars may potentially be funding those abortions – HELL YES I have a right and it is my place to tell you HELL NO you can’t have that abortion.  You made the mistake – you either pay for it yourself or you have the child.  I won’t pay for it.

Before you libbers jump all over me for that last statement – let’s look at the statistics – of the approximately 1.5 million abortions performed annually in the United States – only 7.2% of those are due to risk to maternal health (2.8%); risk to fetal health (3.3%), or other (includes incest and rape – 2.1%).  The remaining 92.8% are mistakes and the woman is using abortion as a form of birth control:

  • Wants to postpone childbearing:  25.5%
  • Wants no (more) children:  7.9%
  • Cannot afford a baby:  21.3%
  • Having a child will disrupt education or job: 10.8%
  • Has relationship problem or partner does not want pregnancy: 14.1%
  • Too young; parent(s) or other(s) object to pregnancy: 12.2%
  • I’m sorry – but these are not legitimate excuses for having an abortion. In every one of those cases those babies could have been put up for adoption to other families that so frightfully want children but are unable to. Abortions are selfish – and – I’m not going to pay for it. These provisions need to be stripped from any bill that even attempts to reform our health care system.

I will not debate the issue in detail now, but just say its too bad its always the guys that comment and not the women that have had it done. I know the Pope is the most conservative person on earth and the Catholic church does not allow abortions. Consequently, these poor African women who are used as cattle by the men have a dozen kids, and remain sex slaves all their lives as just one example. Also, nobody ever mentions that in the U.S.A. 100,000 (one hundred thousand) Americans die yearly because of medical mistakes. Also, it is estimiated that this new health care proposal would only insure 25 million Americans, leaving another 25 million unisured. As we all know, preventitive health care is the cheapest form of care, but the doctors would rather earn 25,000 thousand dollars a pop then prevent a medical condition that would only pay them maybe 500 dollars.

As a woman, I completely agree with Bobo.  My tax dollars should NOT go toward something I consider to be morally wrong.Personally, I believe women have a responsibility whether the pregnacy was forced on them or not, to take responsibility for the new life within them and protect it.  It may be our body, but that is a whole other person growing inside there that we should be considering.  It is part of of our humanity – life is precious.  If it means we put that child up for adoption after its birth because we can’t take care of it, so be it.  There are plenty of people and organizations willing to help not only during the pregnancy, but after.  Inconvenience and hardship is not an excuse.

      Bobo,

You and I had a good run on agreeing on stuff! You don’t think your tax dollars are paying for abortions now? I don’t have stats, but I doubt those planned parenthood places are self sustaining.

I am pro choice, almost because I don’t want the gov’t telling me what the women folk in my life can or can’t do. As far as the tax argument, I am SURE there are alot of other things they pay for that you are against.

I am pro choice, but your right to be you includes my right to be free from you. Hence, your right to have unprotected sex includes my right to not have to pay for your STD treatments, your abortion, or your kids lunch at school, whatever the case may be. In my view, you have the right to an abortion. But you damn sure don’t have the right to tell me I have to pay for it.

      @EuroYank,
Let me give you the name of a woman who has been through it and now lectures against abortion.
Her name is Norma McCorvey. You may or may not know her name but she is the Jane Roe in the Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision. She speaks out against abortion regularly and has written a book on her experience.
There is no way tax payer money should ever be used to pay for abortions. It is just plain wrong.

What is now happening, though stressful for all, is a good thing – these buttons being pushed allow Americans to wake up and participate, as they should, in their own governing. If we are not dictating what we will and will not allow our tax dollars to go, then we are subjects, not citizens. I look forward to the day that each state shrugs off the subordinate role it has allowed itself to take, in relation to the Federal government. When that happens, and we return to the proper structure of our Republic, reminding those who are spending so recklessly just who runs this country, then and only then will we be able to ensure that our tax dollars go to things that we believe they should. If 90% of America believes we should fund abortion, I’ll stand aside – but, I don’t believe that is the case (far from it is my guess). But we aren’t debating – yet. We aren’t deciding – yet. What we are doing now is good for America – many of us are, at least, now scrutinizing our “public servants” and their unread bills and challenging our own selves, to be leaders and Citizens. As Brandeis said, the only office superior to that of President is that of Citizen (to paraphrase :-) . It’s great to see posts and blogs that set an example of what it means to be a functioning CITIZEN. Great job – I’ll link to your blog.

Heya Bobo- been a while! I just had to comment here. I’m a woman, and I’m one of those crazy libertarian types that believes we can’t impose our religious morality on others. BUT let me say it this way, because I do agree with you here. We shouldn’t be using tax dollars to fund abortions because we shouldn’t be using our tax dollars to fund any health care. I think focusing on these small issues takes away from the larger argument at hand. If we focus only on the moral issues, it makes people forget that the heart of the issue is to preserve basic free market principals. It is focusing on keeping the government out of our free market (or lack thereof at the moment) that will defeat this thing.

@Hey all – so sorry for the long delay in responding.  Thank you all for your varied input.  What really matters – whether you agree with abortion or not, is that this is a moral issue that many disagree with and it should never be funded by taxpayers.

There is an exorbitant amount of cost going into and surrounding the establishment of this bill. However these costs are only in addition to the overall cost of health care. Complete health care reform is necessary, not simply the provider care reform which we are currently awaiting. . According to Eva Mor author of (Making the Golden Years Golden), “The administration of the existing health delivery system is bloated with waste and unnecessary cost. If information was shared by all providers of health services and all insurers by using computerized systems to store all medical records, it would cut costs and reduce errors that would save and improve lives.” http://www.ourblook.com/component/option,com_sectionex/Itemid,200076/id,8/view,category/#catid107 Preventative care is something we need desperately in this country so the real question is going to be, how do we get it? Especially when there are so many parties who have private interests at stake in the face of reform. Health care is a public service which every American will eventually require at some point in their lives, however as it stands, health care has been diluted by bureaucracy, industry, and politics.

      1. The BoBoNo Gravatar Says:

Maguire – thanks for your contribution to the discussion. I don’t know how old that quote from Eva Mor is – but – it has already been mandated by this administration that every health care provider in this country be on EHR (Electronic Health Records) by 2014 – there are no exceptions. You can find it in the HITECH Act that was incorporated in to the ARRA signed by P-BO in February. Sure – that will bring down costs – but – medical record administration is just a fraction of the overall costs of running a medical practice – I know – I work for the largest Primary Care provider in Florida. If this government really wanted to reform health care and make access more affordable – they would implement tort reform and cap the amount of MedMal awards and they would also fine lawyers for filing frivolous lawsuits. The biggest cost to any medical practice is our medical malpractice insurance which is exorbitant due to those ambulance chasers. But, since our government is made up almost entirely of lawyers – there will never be true health care reform and there will never be affordable access.

Abortion is always a big subject in the
world current affairs but when I think about the subject, I always think it’s a
last resort when then in turn makes me think, how people can get into this
situation in the first place. I think abortion should only be on health insurance if
it has to be done due if there is maternal and fetal health risk if a woman was
raped; there is really no excuse for other circumstances and it’s not really
fair for other to pay for it. For that situation more money could be spent on
safe sex education, awkward subject I know but if people are taught then there
is hopefully a decrease in unwanted pregnancies then a decrease in abortions.
