The BoBo Carnival of Politics – November 8, 2009 Edition
Posted by: The BoBo // Category: BoBo, Carnival, Conservative, Liberals, Politics, blogs, government, health care, libertarianHi all – and welcome to another fine edition of the carnival. I’m sure as you all have heard – while many were sleeping last night – Congress passed that disastrous health care bill that is sure to do this country in. Let’s hope it dies in the Senate.
Conservative
Scott Spiegel presents Obama Decision not to Campaign in Upstate New York Hands Unexpected Win to Democrat posted at Scott Spiegel.
Yeah..I don’t think its a coincidence either despite what the MSM and DNC are saying. But, the word out there is that Hoffman would have won hands down had the RNC done the right thing in the first place and supported him rather than the RINO. Besides – Owens just went back on 4 campaign promises before he even set foot in D.C. Those idiots who voted for him in NY-23 got what they deserve in him.
Liberal
Madeleine Begun Kane presents “Short On Facts” Fox posted at Mad Kane’s Political Madness.
Not real sure what the point of this one is, Mad Kane – War and Peace was originally 1,225 pages long and its 2006 revision has 1,475 pages. Are you insinuating that the 1990 page bill has less pages than War and Peace?
Glowing Face Man presents The Work Ethic posted at Glowing Face Man, saying, “In this article I argue that we shouldn’t work so hard, we should change “the work ethic” into more of a “leisure ethic”"
Sorry – gotta disagree with you on this 100%. I can see why this is under the Liberal category. Success is a direct result from individual effort and labor. The more you put in to it the more success you will have. I’m living proof of this. I am self-made and have succeeded thus far as a direct relationship to my input of that success. I work my butt off now so that I can retire comfortably and enjoy that retirement. Likewise, I budget enough money and time to ensure myself and my family can enjoy leisure time. Your premise that workers should do the bare minimum on the job and maximize enjoyment to make general civilization more successful is very foreign to me. It might fit the liberal lifestyle – but – for those of us who actually believe in personal responsibility and true success it just doesn’t fit. I can tell you, if any of my employees just put out the minimum required – I will fire them. I don’t want anybody who just shows up because it is a job. I want employees who are there because they enjoy their job and they get self-satisfaction from a job well done and will do what they need to do to succeed. Your plan will get a lot of people around this country on the unemployment line and will definitely give them a lot of leisure time.
Libertarian
Zhu presents Working Class Hero Is Something To Be posted at Correr Es Mi Destino, saying, “To be rich in North America, you either have to be : a) incredibly smart (cf. Bill Gates) b) incredibly stupid (cf. Paris Hilton). To be rich in France you can try the two methods above but frankly, few people will bother. Money, you have it or you don’t. And most of time, if you do, you inherited it.”
Zhu – welcome to the carnival – great post. I spent a little over 10 years in Europe. While I certainly enjoyed my time there, North America – and in my case – U.S.A. – I think you were spot on. We all have an opportunity and a shot at achieving “the American dream.” That is because of the freedom that we have to make our own choices. Unfortunately, America is slowly becoming a nanny state and falling to the throes of socialism like Europe. If we don’t reverse what is happening, our grandchildren – and perhaps our children – will never have the opportunity to achieve the iconic “American dream.”
Archvillain presents Last Chance posted at A Dark and Sinister Force for Good, saying, “This story makes me fear for the future of the Republic- and that future hinges on an upcoming ruling by SCOTUS”
HOLY SHIT! I hope SCOTUS actually decides to uphold the 5th Amendment and absolutely allow this case to proceed. McGhee and Harrington have every right at this point to just go completely postal if they wanted to. Given that SCOTUS really hasn’t been upholding the constitution for at least the last 3 decades, I find it hard to believe they might actually decide that prosecutors can be sued – especially in this type of case. They will be opening a can of worms – as it should be open. Prosecutors have only been getting little slaps on the hand for misconduct. However, what these guys did goes well beyond simple misconduct – they knowingly allowed two individuals to be framed and serve time for a crime they did not commit. I’ll say it again – HOLY SHIT!
News
Steven and Debra presents Is Your Money Safe? Wrong Question!! posted at The END TIMES Hoax.
So – who actually submitted this – Steven or Debra – or did you both take turns hitting some buttons?
This is a great post – and – you’re right – that is indeed the wrong question. Given the weakening of the economy and the dollar – worrying about purchasing power and inflation are a little more important.
Aetius Romulous presents Impossibleism posted at ScreamBucket.
Excellent analysis once again. If government would just get out of the way and let the free market work the way it is supposed to – we wouldn’t be in this mess. Failure is a part of life and the economic cycle. Our lives improve because someone failed and we learned from it. We’re living in a lie right now. We should have let all of those banks and auto makers fail. Sure – it would have hurt for a little bit – but – someone else who learned from their mistakes would have come along and made improvements – until the next failure.
Joe E presents Private Student Loans May Soon Be Regulated by the Government After Recent Vote in Congress posted at Consolidating Student Loans Online, saying, “The education sector may soon see a huge change in terms of private student loans. A recent vote in congress has taken Obama’s education plan one step closer to becoming a reality.”
Actually, this is very timely. I just received notice on Friday that my student loan was taken over by the Department of Education. I’m trying to figure out my options now because I certainly do not want to be on the end of that leash. But, the problem with the bill that was passed is the fact that it was completely unnecessary. There has never been any reports of large-scale deceptive lending practices in the private student loan sector. This is just another ruse for the federal government to take over private industry. This is no longer America.
SVB presents Economic Growth Is Up. What Now? posted at The Digerati Life, saying, “Thoughts on the jobless economic recovery.”
I like the way you broke this down in to 6 different categories. I definitely believe the stock market is ahead of itself. As for inflation – I believe that we have double-digit inflation coming around the corner. I hate to be the nay-sayer as I’m generally an optimistic person. However, I don’t believe the propaganda coming out of this administration. There are still way too many negatives. What we saw last quarter was fake. The numbers were propped up because of VERY short-term policies. I believe the 4th quarter numbers are going to be dismal and reflect the reality of what is going on. I think this government used the short term policies to “reset” the recession clock. Since there was on quarter that showed improvement – when the next quarter results show GDP losses again – they will effectively reset the recession clock back to 1 month. We still haven’t bottomed out in the housing market and foreclosures are still increasing. Unemployment continues to increase and we have a trade deficit that is continuing to increase. Like I said – I don’t like being a nay-sayer – but – I just don’t see it. I think you were right at the beginning of the post – “they say.” Keep up the great work. As always – your post was very informative and helpful. I hope I’m wrong.
Politics
smrtas1 presents Pelosi Pushes for Tort Reform? posted at Conservative Patriot HQ.
Yeah – I wouldn’t exactly call that tort reform since it tells the states they can’t impose laws that limit the amount the lawyers can make. Besides, now that we know this passed in the house – if this provision stays – you know this is a direct violation of the 10th Amendment. The Federal Government cannot make this kind of imposition – nevertheless force any state to accept a federal program such as this.
Surbhi Bhatia presents The Story of Kashmir: The Sin of Being Who You Are posted at The Viewspaper » The Viewspaper.
Thanks for this interesting look and brief history lesson of Kashmir. I had no idea. If the film shows any of the history that you mentioned – it would be worth seeing.
Jacob Johnson presents Common Sense Caucus: Where Democrats Went Wrong on Health Insurance Reform posted at Common Sense Caucus, saying, “Jacob Johnson graduated from Iowa State University in 2008 with a B.A. in Liberal Studies and a minor in Political Science. He served on now President Barack Obama’s 2008 Presidential Campaign for 9 months, covering 7 states throughout the primary and general election. He now resides in his hometown of West Des Moines, Iowa. Please send comments and requests to jake.johnson@obamaalumni.com”
Jacob – welcome to the carnival. Apparently, you must have believed Alan Grayson’s lie about the 44,000 deaths per year due to no insurance. The study that he quoted that from is right here. It is severely flawed and the numbers are fake. First – since this is your first time here – you probably do not know that I am working on my Ph.D. in Epidemiology – I’m on the dissertation now…with regards to the survival analysis conducted in this study – this I am VERY familiar with…so..let’s break this down:
If you look at the variables they used in their survival analysis – insurance is not one of them because they didn’t collect this type of data. Don’t you think that if they are doing a study to determine deaths associated with lack of insurance they should actually find out who had insurance and who didn’t at the time of death?
Additionally, it states:
“Our study has several limitations. NHANES III assessed health insurance at a single point in time and did not validate self-reported insurance status.”
I have published studies as well using NHANES and survival analysis. While there are precedent studies that point in time results predict future point in time results, it is a bias that has to be accounted for – which they do not. Instead – they used point in time data as valid. Therefore, they cannot use the determined hazard ratio to predict future results – i.e. the 44,587 deaths in 2005. The data they used only went to 1994. Not only that, they don’t state which year in specific they utilized as the PIT measurement. As far as we know, they are trying to use data obtained in 1986 to predict death rates 20 years later and at minimum 11 years later. This is a severely flawed study and was used as propaganda by Grayson. Just because two of the authors are from Harvard doesn’t make it any more credible. The fact of the matter is that more than 25% of peer reviewed papers published in journals have severe flaws – this being one of those.
smrtas1 presents 3 Billion Reasons to Distrust House Health Care Reform Bill posted at Conservative Patriot HQ.
This almost seems like a moot point now doesn’t it? Either way – we need to continue to pound the pavement with these types of stories to continue to rally everyone and make sure the senate does pass it either.
Tamir Birk presents A New Perspective on the Abortion Debate posted at Informed Vote | Keeping Canadian Voters Informed.
Well – I do agree with the basic premise of your post – however, you lost all credibility when you called the U.N. a “credible international organization.” I won’t go in to all their corruption in this response since it is beside the point. What I will say is that I wrote a paper on abortion for one of my classes – I am pro-life. I chose to do this paper on this topic to challenge myself as a scientist. I wanted to see if I could remain completely unbiased regarding a topic that I clearly have a bias for. I too found the same results. I don’t believe that abortion should be criminalized. While I do believe it is murder – I believe the best way to reduce abortion is through education. What I am opposed to is government/taxpayer funded abortions. Since I am opposed, I do not believe the government has the authority to take my money and violate my constitutionally guaranteed First Amendment right to freedom OF religion. My religion and belief is that abortion is murder and a sin – therefore – the government cannot force me to pay for it.
Tamir Birk presents Safe Crack Houses in Canada posted at Informed Vote | Keeping Canadian Voters Informed.
Okay – you’ve stepped in to my world on this one – C. Laurel Ostfield lied about the W.H.O. report and illicit drugs. You can find the report here. What the report really says is to give such individuals “safe chill out places” and to provide them with “education kits” – not provide safe places for them to get high and to provide them the means to do so. Such drug users need to be arrested, detoxed, then placed in inpatient treatment. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a proven technique and recidivism is low. Keeping drug users high and doing nothing to stop them from getting high might help decrease the spread of disease – but – if you really want to eradicate the spread from drug use – do what is necessary to prevent it in the first place. Whoever this Ostfield individual is – he/she obviously is an idiot and didn’t learn a thing about public health. This intervention that he/she is proposing has a very minimal and almost insignificant effect on the spread of infectious disease in the general population. This intervention is only significant in the drug user community. Like I said, if you want to prevent it – stop the drug use.
smrtas1 presents Alternative Healthcare Reform Bill Would Save $1.7 Trillion posted at Conservative Patriot HQ.
Well – like I said above…a moot point. Bastards. Nevertheless – this is a great post and I only wish the Republicans would have made a stronger push at getting this information out there. They waited waaaaay too long. This debate started last November when P-BO got elected. They should have started working on their bill then…not wait until the last minute.
Albie presents End of poverty. Start of prosperity. (Updated 22/10) posted at iDevelopWorld.
Eh..that’s all well and good – but – what I saw as a solution is redistribution of wealth from rich nations to poor nations. That is not a sound solution. A sound solution to bringing those poor nations out of poverty is freedom and democracy. Those “poor” nations are poor because their governments are corrupt. All the money stays with the political elite, monarchs, and dictators. Foreign aide money that is intended to make it to the “poor” never get there. If you want a real solution to end global poverty – get rid of the dictators and give the people real freedom. While Sachs does have some lofty goals – economic prosperity cannot be gained by one giving it to another. True economic prosperity comes from a free people that have no governmental barriers. The goals are admirable, but lofty and unattainable as structured.
Euroyank presents The Real American Unemployment Rate Coverup posted at EuroYank The Blog.
Euroyank – this is a must read for everybody. My readers are pretty educated in these manners – however, you have provided additional details that I was not aware of. My readers may know about this already – if not – you will be educating them. I knew the “reported” numbers were lies – I just didn’t realize how far off they really were. Not only that, but, you are spot on with regards to the underlying cause of the demise of this country and our economy. Great post.
That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of The BoBo Carnival of Politics using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

November 9th, 2009 at 2:09 am Re your comment on my post and limerick, War and Peace’s page count doesn’t count. It’s the number of words that matter. And War and Peace is far longer when it comes to word-count. Of course, judging a bill by it’s length is silly in any event. It’s the substance that should count.

Okay – I see where you’re coming from now. But, given these are supposed to be laws that affect every American – I do believe page count and word count do matter. When they become so freakin’ convoluted that it confuses even the lawmakers and gives little to no time for review before a vote – it definitely matters. I agree that content should come first – however, when it gets to the point where it is 2000 pages long – that content essentially becomes meaningless (as far as legislation goes).

November 9th, 2009 at 9:44 am I’m not a religious person, but I have faith that our Senate will kill off the disastrous Health Care bill, the equally disastrous Climate Change bill, and just about any other cockamamie legislation the Dems try to pass in the name of Utopian politics.I got to vote last week, and I (and the spousal unit) helped evict the political aspirations of Creigh Deeds (D), as well as any other Dems and incumbents. The institutional fixture we all knew around here as Delegate Algie Howell was taken down to boot! That was kind of a shame though–he was the one to write a city law that forbade droopy-assed pants in city limits, boxer shorts on or no.

Well, Wenchypoo – all we can do is hope we can get it killed in the senate. Good on you and the spousal unit for doing your civic duty!!!!

I thought you’d find this computational site interesting. Among other things, it compares that health bill to some other bills in terms of length : http://computationallegalstudies.com/2009/11/08/facts-about-the-length-of-h-r-3962/You may be surprised to hear I prefer bills to be shorter too and that there are many things about the bill I don’t like. In fact, my far more progressive version would have been been much shorter.

Thanks for hosting the carnival
I agree with you about putting in effort and working hard to pull yourself up. I’m one of the hardest working people I know =P it’s just that most of that work is self-imposed, not work forced on me by supervisors. Total inactivity goes against human nature. As technology reduces the “basic necessities” of work, people should become more free to direct themselves. The alternative would be more and more “jobs for jobs’ sake”. If technology automates things so much that the only way to increase employment is for the government to pay people to do pointless tasks, then the government may as well pay them to do nothing
