Another reason to say NO to the “stimulus” package – death!

Posted by: The BoBo  //  Category: A Nation at Risk, America, Congress, Liberals, Obama, Politics, President, Socialism, government, marxism

Some of you may or may not be aware that one of the items in this so-called stimulus package is the provision of appointing an individual to oversee our healthcare system and to assist physicians in making medical decisions and keeping costs down.  You can see that here and here (this is actually a new department) and here. Michelle Malkin has more detail on the socialized medicine provision as well.  This is the particular section of the last one I gave you that everyone needs to understand:

‘‘(4) provides appropriate information to help guide medical decisions at the time and place of care; ‘‘(5) ensures the inclusion of meaningful public input in such development of such infrastructure;

This is in reference to the duties of the newly created position of National Coordinator of Health Information Technology.  Do we really want the government controlling our physicians and their medical decision making processes?

The following is a very tragic story – it comes to us from England and this is exactly what could happen to us if we allow nationalized medicine here in this country:

Girl Starves After All Her Teeth Are Pulled

(Feb. 9) – An 8-year-old British girl who was terrified of dentists starved to death because she refused to eat after all her baby teeth were extracted, an inquest was told Monday.
British media reported Sophie Waller died Dec. 2 in her home in St. Dennis, Cornwall, in southwestern England. A pathologist told the inquest in Truro, Cornwall, that the girl died of acute kidney failure caused by dehydration and starvation, the BBC News said.

Sophie developed a fear of dentists as a 4-year-old when a dentist accidentally cut her tongue during a check-up, the inquest was told, according to the Daily Mail.
Four years later, she cracked a tooth on a candy but refused to go to the dentist. After she would not eat for three days, she was admitted to a hospital, where doctors removed all of her baby teeth.
Sophie’s parents, Janet and Richard Waller, insisted they only gave consent for one tooth to be pulled, not eight.

“She didn’t like dentists already so she was very freaked out. She had blood running all down her face. The poor girl was devastated,” Janet Waller said.

Sophie was discharged from the hospital in Nov. 17 but thereafter refused to eat solid food, the Times of London said. Her parents said they could get her to swallow only small amounts of yogurt and mashed fruit.
The Wallers said they called the hospital on Nov. 28 but was told Sophie could not be readmitted. Instead they were told to contact a community child psychologist who had been assigned to the case, and the psychologist told them not to worry. Sophie’s parents said they talked to their regular family doctor once over the phone, but no medical practitioner ever saw the child.

“No one saw her after she was discharged from hospital. I told [the child psychologist] she was sucking on a watermelon, she told me that was enough for her to survive on,” Janet Waller said. ‘I asked her to come round and see her but she kept saying there is nothing to worry about and I’ll come next week.”

“This could have easily been avoided, if we could have just gone to the hospital,” Sophie’s father said.

I emphasized that last line there.  This is not the fault of the parents this time.  This is the fault of a government controlled healthcare system based on rationing of care.  If we let this stimulus bill pass we are setting up the first steps to Universal Healthcare based on rationing of care – and cases such as Sophie’s will start showing up in U.S. news as well!
Besides – what the hell does creating a national healthcare oversight department have anything to do with stimulating the economy?
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – Obama is a freakin’ idiot and a buffoon.  That Harvard education that he got was definitely bought off because he sure did not learn a damned thing.  He’s inexperienced and doesn’t have a clue about economics or taxes and the people he’s been putting on his cabinet don’t know shit either otherwise they wouldn’t be trying to ram this piece of shit down our throats.  They’ve completely ignored the advice of the Congressional Budget Office and from well respected economists around this country.
Sure – they’ve closed debate on the issue – but – we can still urge our Senators to vote NO on this crapulous bill.  I found a great graphic that everyone needs to see if you still haven’t gotten the picture yet (click on the graphic if you want to see a larger picture and the discussion from the Washington Post):
UPDATE: I guess the debate AND the vote is over.  Those idiots with the help of three RINO’s passed this idiotic bill.

That’s his next plan anyway. Socialized medicine. He’ll couch it as the poor can now be seen by a doctor. He’s a socialist. Anyone with a brain knows that. He’s scares the living daylights out of me.

    Have a terrific day. :)

I’ve got to admit this chart boggles my mind, but then the whole stimulus package boggles my mind. You are right on the mark about health care. My son, who works in London, went to a national health service clinic for a severe case of bronchitis and was told to return in six weeks if he was not better. Then, they would consider prescribing an antibiotic.

The US health care system is the best in the world. There is an access problem, but the solution is surely to work on better access, better and broader insurance plans, rather than government mandates to narrow treatment options. Obama’s stealth government health care plan is a plan to share the misery equally, at best.

Another great post, Bobo. I just posted an opinion piece from the Wall Street Journal on the folly of the Canadian health care system that liberals and progressives LOVE to tout as a model for our own. Everybody should read it:

I also agree with you on Obama. I watched him last night give his speech. And quite frankly, he came across as kinda snide and condescending regarding Republican opposition to the stimulus package; he’s using the same gross generalizations he used during his campaign to win people over. He came across as naive and partisan. I wasn’t impressed.

    Hi, Bobo:

The position of National Health Information Technology director was created four years ago by Bush.

Here’s a link to the current director’s bio directly from HHS.gov website:

@Sandy – he scares the heck outta me as well.

@Terro – after having lived in Europe for several years myself and having had to use civilian facilities over there, I would have to agree. The American health system is the best in the world. This bill and this provision will doom our health system and marginalize it. You can count on the fact there will be no new technological breakthroughs coming from the U.S. if this happens.

@VH – thanks. much appreciated. I think Obama is just trying to confuse the public with all this shit to keep our eyes of the main focus – which is – socializing and nationalizing every institution in this country and making the people dependent upon government. Thanks for the link.

@Skyewriter – thanks for that link. However, the main point is that what the bill does is expand that department beyond just implementing HIT in the U.S. It now creates an Orwellian department within the government that will now have complete access to your medical records through EMR and the government will be making your healthcare decisions instead of your doctor. This is a gross violation of our privacy rights that goes well beyond HIPAA. I know you are a practical individual. Surely you can see what damage this would cause. Where the heck is the ACLU on this one?

Starting on page 238 of the final version being voted on today, there are *no* provisions for the government to dictate treatment. Not one. That misinformation sadly made it through the mouth of a Pharma lobbyist (Betsy McCaughey), into the throat of Rush Limbaugh and out into the MSM without people looking at the resume of the woman who started the lie: http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2009/02/11/betsy-mccaughey/

The database will be made available for doctors to post treatment successes and failures; basically it provides the means to do large, longitudinal, parallel studies without government-funded, research facilities.

Also, there are huge penalties and fines for breach of confidentiality of those records.

@Skyewriter – I rarely, if ever, listen to Rush. I’m at work during the time he’s on the radio. You know that I do my own research and I reach my own conclusions. That section that I quoted up there comes directly from the original Senate version that I also linked in this post. I don’t even know who Betsy McCaughey is. I looked at the final version of the bill, you can find that here, and on page 293. The exact wording I mentioned was in the Senate version is also in this final version under Division A of the entire bill.

    http://appropriations.house.gov/pdf/Recovery_Bill_Div_A.pdf

I don’t even need to do a copy/paste out of the final version because it is 100% identical to what I stated in the original post.

Also, I looked at page 238 – it says nothing of what you stated herein. Page 238 is about transportation and intercity rail service.

On page 302 – here is the exact wording regarding the establishment of a nationalized health information repository:

    “(8) GOVERNANCE FOR NATIONWIDE HEALTH
    INFORMATION NETWORK.-The National Coordinator
shall establish a governance mechanism for the
    nationwide health information network.

I know we agree to disagree, Bobo. And as ever, I appreciate your civility in the dialogue.

How do you interpret pages 243-246 (very top of 246) of the pdf? Page 250? Page 263, item (b)? Transparency (254, item 4; 257, item 3)? HIPAA provision page 264?

To be sure we are looking at the same pages numbers here’s the link to the conferenced bill that the House just passed:
    http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=111_cong_bills&docid=f:h1eas.txt.pdf

I guess I cannot understand how two intelligent people can read the same document and come to such opposing comprehension of it.

@Skyewriter – we’ll work from your document. It is close to the same one that I retrieved off of the Speaker’s site – except the one I looked at is the actual documentation scanned in with all the handwritten notes.

Okay – with regards to these sections you mentioned and in reference to HIPAA – you have actually delved in to my world believe it or not. I am a Privacy & Security Officer for a VERY large private healthcare organization. What these sections all refer to are already in the HIPAA privacy and security rules. These are nothing new.

Go back and look at page 229 section b “nationwide health information infrastructure” and section b4 of this document and at page 265 section b (line 25) “federal activities involving the broad collection and submission of health information…”

Under the Privacy Rule 164.512(d) and (k) these are written loosely enough that the Federal Government is permitted to access your personal health information if they deem it is necessary for “health oversight” or if they decide to classify it as a “specialized government function.” HIPAA only applies to covered entities that are defined as health care providers, health care insurers, and electronic clearinghouses that submit claims electronically. HIPAA does not apply to the Federal government themselves.

The sections that you mentioned regarding HIPAA and the Federal Government’s role with regards to remaining consistent with the rule only means that they will create this national health information repository and will access the information in accordance to their understanding of how the Federal Government may access it. The privacy and security rules do not state the Federal Government can’t have access to the information. It specifies how they can get access to it.

Now, instead of having to receive information from individual providers by paper and making their request on paper – they will have a large database at their fingertips and access the national repository of information rather than requesting it from individual physicians whereby eliminating the need for that provider to have to account for that disclosure to the patient. We as patients will not know that the federal government has accessed our information any longer since the physicians won’t know.

However, under section b4 on page 229 – we’ll start knowing it when the government starts telling our physicians they can’t perform a certain procedure for an individual patient without prompting from the physician. Read b4 again very closely and with a discerning eye. You will see what I mean. It means, now when a physician is entering data in to this national health information repository regarding a certain patient – they will receive immediate information through this system regarding the care and treatment of those patients. This is indeed the first step to a socialized system of medicine.

Hey! BoBo – you somehow find it comforting to know that your medical care is overseen by someone whose sole job is to deny you proper medical care and save the insurer some money. Some bureaucrat somewhere with no knowledge of good medical practice currently stands between you and your doctor – this is a good thing? The US has the highest cost medical care in the world but ranks only 41 in medical care – do you consider this a good working system?

ps I used to use ‘GrimJack’ but thought I would like being grumpy to grim – no attempt to hide who I am.

@GrimJack/Grumpy – nice to see you back. So, how is it better to have a government employee make that decision? Also, I’ve been in all aspects of healthcare for the last 18 years – the only time you have someone making such decisions is in a fee-for-service environment. Managed Care and other HMO’s all decisions are controlled by the physicians and medical directors. Your argument doesn’t hold water.
